Encompasses District of Columbia, Northeast Virginia, and Southwest Maryland. Statistically, extends to Frederick County in the north, Charles and Stafford Counties in the south, Prince Georges and Calvert Counties in the east, and the City of Manassas in the west. Area increased in population more than 20 % between 1980-90. 1990 population: 3,923,574 (84.5% in suburbs and 15.5% in DC); population density: 992 pers/sq. mi. Economic health rate in 1990 ranked 20th among 113 metro areas.
Intersected by the Potomac River, with more than 8 square miles of water within its borders, DC abounds with tourist attractions, including the Library of Congress; Kennedy Center for Performing Arts; the Mall; Capitol; White House; Lincoln, Jefferson, and Vietnam Veterans Memorials; Smithsonian Institution; Mount Vernon; and many others.
